Program Notes
"The first movement is an introspective tone poem with expansive lyricism coupled with quick changing rhythmic contrasts. The second movement is a brilliantly textured perpetual motion with incessant drive and motoric energy. The third movement begins with a brooding solo flute cadenza, which builds towards an intense climax recollecting elements from earlier movements and presenting long cantabile lines juxtaposed against lush harmonic backgrounds highlighted with syncopated 'jazzy' patterns and sharp pulsating accents. Ultimately, it is my love of the Baroque which influenced the aural basis and inspiration for this concerto, and it is my intense desire that the listener allow himself or herself to be drawn into the direct and personal emotional experience which this concerto offers, and which, to my mind at least, is the quintessential basis for a genuinely creative appreciation and understanding in all music."
