Program Notes:

In the spirit of concert works like Walter Piston's Toccata and John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine, or the Prelude of Miklos Rozsa's score for the 1946 film “The Killers”, William Thomas McKinley's orchestral showpiece serves as a kinetic, muscular and brilliant musical discourse in moto pereptuo that mixes neo-classicism with extended tonal episodes built upon vibrant rhythmic cells embellishing concise melodic lines that, during the course of the work, are metamorphosed by the rhythmic activity that slowly progresses into an expansive aural and emotional experience for performer and listener alike.

Designated as a grand orchestral finale by its composer to be a closing work for a concert, Flyin' Home was commissioned by Gerard Schwarz and the New York Chamber Symphony which premiered the composition in the fall of 1997.
